This Girl Can

‘This Girl Can’ council was formed of 20 students across KS3. The council planned and organised a week of girl only activities to promote female participation in sport. Activities included Dodgeball, Gloercise, Rugby, Boxercise and Trampolining with a highlight of their week hosting primary schools from across the region in different sporting activities. “I really enjoyed the fact I was getting more girls into sport”- Madison. The girls organised, umpired and supported the younger students, receiving positive praise from primary school staff.

All activities were well attended with over 200 participants taking part throughout the week. There was a real buzz around the school with the female students thriving in the sporting spotlight. There was a fantastic turn out to Gloercise from both students and staff who let their neon colours shine bright as they worked hard, had fun whilst improving their fitness. “I really enjoyed doing exercise as well as having fun at the same time” – Paris. As a result of this we are in the process of implementing Gloercise into our extra-curricular programme.

The rugby team proved that they can give ‘mud mask a new meaning’ by representing JHNCC in a full contact game and came out victorious. Some fantastic rugby on display! Overall the week was a resounding success, igniting interest in our extra-curricular programme as well as female students engaging in new sporting activities outside of school. “I really felt inspired by the ‘This Girl Can’ week. I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried new things, I really enjoyed the gloercise and even tried trampolining” – Lilymai. This Girl Can!
