Transition 2018

Hello and a very warm welcome to all of the young people and their families who will be joining us this September. It really is an honour to have so many of you who have opted to join our fantastic school community and I know that you too will feel honoured to be a part of John Henry Newman Catholic College.

For many students secondary school represents a step towards independence and the whole process of growing up and leaving childhood behind. Whilst the move to secondary school is exciting, it is also a big change and it is not surprising that parents and students often feel anxious. John Henry Newman Catholic College aims to make the transfer from primary education to secondary education as easy and informative as possible.

Firstly, we understand that over the course of the transition period there may be several questions that you will want to ask us. With this in mind, we have included several links on this transition page which will be useful in addressing any questions or concerns that you may have. Also included on this page is a series of FAQs that will be updated regularly. However, should your question (no matter how big or small) not be addressed, please do not hesitate to contact our transitions team – transition2018@jhncc.org.

Secondly, on the 16th or 17th of May you and your child will be invited into school for our transition evening. This is the first opportunity you as a family will have the chance to come into school and meet a member of staff who will get to know your child. It is also an opportunity for your child to let us know any requests they may have e.g. friends they might like to be in a form group with.

Finally, John Henry Newman Catholic College is providing three action packed ‘Summer School’ days that will take place on Wednesday 25th to Friday 27th July. Summer School will be full of fun for our new starters and it is a great opportunity to for our new, year 7 pupils to meet other students who will be in their year group. Summer School is great in allowing the children to make new friends and quell any nerves they may have. It is also a chance for the children to meet some of the remarkable staff who will be teaching them over the forthcoming years.

Transition is also a great opportunity for parents to prepare for the commitment to supporting learning that comes in secondary school. It is essential that throughout the summer you outline the John Henry Newman Catholic College expectations so that your child is prepared for school in September. Preparation for secondary school can take place in many ways for example; allowing your child to organise their own belongings each night and giving your child small tasks which encourages independence and responsibility. Encouraging your child to read each evening will help to prepare for the higher level academia that your child will be learning. It is also a good idea to go through our school Heart virtues and values which are the underpinning and foundations of our Catholic ethos here in school (a link to our Heart values and virtues can be found on this transitions page).

Once again, I hope that you find our transition page useful and please keep on checking for updates.

I look forward to meeting you all over the forthcoming months.

Mrs L. Collins
Head of Year 7 (2018)
