Course Overview
The BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport is a two-year Level 3 qualification equivalent to one A Level. The course provides students with a strong foundation in sports science, practical performance and the professional skills required for progression into higher education or the sports industry. Learning is delivered through a blend of theory, applied study and practical assessment.
Year 1 Units
Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology
Students develop an in-depth understanding of the body systems involved in sport and exercise, including the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. This unit explores how these systems respond to short-term and long-term physical activity and prepares students for careers or further study within sport science, physiotherapy and coaching.
Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance
This unit focuses on developing performance in selected sports through technical skill development, tactical awareness and evaluation of performance. Students participate in practical sessions and complete performance analyses to strengthen their understanding of effective training and gameplay strategies.
Year 2 Units
Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing
Students learn how to assess individual fitness levels and design tailored training programmes based on specific health, lifestyle and performance goals. This externally assessed unit develops advanced knowledge of training methods, principles of fitness and the factors influencing health and wellbeing.
Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry
This unit prepares students for employment within the sport and leisure sector. Learners explore career pathways, understand employer expectations and develop key employability skills such as communication, leadership, organisation and reflective practice. Students create a personal development plan to support their transition into the next stage of education or work.
