‘Get the Jump’ on education and training choices for young people

Taking a next step in life can feel daunting for anyone. But young people aged 14 to 19 are facing two key decision points in their education and training journey – and making a decision today that could affect the rest of their lives can feel overwhelming.

Thankfully, the new ‘Get the Jump’ hub on the National Careers Service website can help take the stress out of young people’s next move.

The hub brings together all post-16 and post-18 education and training choices in one place for the first time. So it’s easier for young people to make an informed decision – whether that’s T Levels, A Levels, university, apprenticeships, a Higher Technical Qualification or something else!

Please take a look and share the hub with the young people you’re advising, giving them a useful tool to help make their next step their best yet.

Get the Jump now

Helping young people land the skills employers need
Reaching the next level

T Levels: A mix of learning in the classroom and on the job for 16- to 19-year-olds. Roughly equal to three A Levels. Designed together with businesses in areas such as construction, digital, engineering, childcare, health and accounting. Could lead to higher education, an apprenticeship or a job.

Explore T Levels >
Earning and learning

Apprenticeships: Working alongside experienced staff to learn while earning a wage. There are over 600 different apprenticeships with levels to suit everyone, including degree apprenticeships. There are no tuition fees. Could lead to higher education, another apprenticeship or a job.

Explore apprenticeships >
Specialist skills can get them hired

Higher Technical Qualifications: Learning technical skills in the classroom. HTQs are an alternative to apprenticeships or degrees, approved by employers. Available now in the digital sector, and from Sept 2023 in construction or health and science. Could lead to further study or a job.

Explore HTQs >

For anyone supporting those in taking their next step in education or career development, we are here to make your choices clearer.

University College Birmingham: Saturday Academies

15th February 2023Mr B Clayton

Hello!

Our Saturday Academies are, once again, back! Our Saturday Academies are for students currently in Year 10 or 11 that are interested in our College of Food courses. It is an interactive 7-week course where students can either undertake a course in Cookery, Bakery or Food and Beverage Service, building upon practical skills and using our facilities to get a first-hand experience on what makes our courses great. And even better, it’s free!

If you’d like more information regarding start dates, conditions and how to apply, please visit our website: https://www.ucb.ac.uk/study/college/take-part-before-you-start/saturday-academies/

Spaces are very limited so please encourage students to book soon as the courses book quickly. If our page shows that nothing is available or there is an error, it will mean the course is now fully booked.

If they have missed out on this opportunity, we encourage them to come to an Open Day or an Applicant Day (if in Year 11) to see and use our facilities, or even book a meal in our Restaurant on site to see our current students run a lunch or dinner service.

  • Our Open Day dates are here: https://www.ucb.ac.uk/open-days/college-open-days/
  • And information regarding our restaurant can be found here: https://restaurant.ucb.ac.uk/

If you have any questions, please contact Chef Richard Dutton on r.dutton2@ucb.ac.uk or ring 0121 604 1000 and dial extension 2616.
