A Prayer and reflection on the Eve of the Summer Term from Brother Andrew

We hope all students and their families have enjoyed the Easter holidays and the improving weather!

Term begins tomorrow morning at the usual start time for each year group. Year 7 and 8 students should be sat in their tutor rooms by 8.30am, Year 9 and 10 students should be sat in their tutor rooms by 8.45am and Year 11 and Sixth Form students should go to their tutor group rooms for a prompt 9am start.

Uniform, appearance and equipment check

The start of term will begin with a uniform, appearance and equipment check. Please ensure your child has the correct uniform and appearance and has a full set of equipment. All parents and carers were sent a copy of the College’s uniform and appearance expectations before Easter. They can be viewed at this link or you can read them at the end of this

Normal lessons resume from period 2 (10am) onwards. Students can check their timetable for tomorrow on Classcharts. Please support your child in making sure that they have everything they need for tomorrow, know what their lessons are and have the correct uniform and shoes.

Home Testing

For those families who are participating in the home testing program, please complete a lateral flow rapid test this evening. With the reductions in restrictions since April 12th, continuing lateral flow testing is a key way to identify potential community transmissions. Please complete the test between 6pm and 8pm and record the result on Classcharts. If your child tests positive, please email attendance@jhncc.org with your child’s details and you will be contacted tomorrow morning.

Please can we remind everyone that if a student is experiencing one or more of the COVID symptoms, they should not take the lateral flow test and instead self-isolate and book a PCR test.

Homework

Since the resumption of face to face lessons, the completion of homework is the single biggest reason for detentions before the Easter holiday. This term we are again asking parents and carers to support their child to complete their homework on time and to a good standard. From tomorrow, please support your child to get into good habits by checking their Classcharts account when they get home and to complete their homework in good time.

Students are expected to follow the guidelines below. Parental/carer support is essential in ensuring that students have the correct uniform and appearance. This applies to uniform, appearance, make up and hair styles. This document provides a helpful reminder of our uniform expectations.
Boys’ Uniform
● Black blazer with school badge
● Plain black school trousers
● Optional plain black V-neck jumper or JHNCC styled V-neck jumper
● Plain white shirt with collar and sleeves (short or long sleeves)
● Plain black socks
● Tie – in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 school tie (the KS3/4 sports ties are able to be worn)
● Black shoes (see additional guidance)
● A suitable waterproof coat for colder/wet weather
● A suitable sized bag to bring books to and from school
Girls’ Uniform
● Black blazer with school badge
● Plain black tailored school trousers fitted to waist
or
plain black knee length skirt. This can be pleated or plain
● Optional plain black V-neck jumper or JHNCC V-neck jumper
● Plain white shirt with collar and sleeves (short or long sleeves)
● Tie – For Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 school tie (the KS3/4 sports ties may able be worn)
● Plain black or white socks or plain natural, grey or black tights (see additional guidance for wearing socks with skirts)
● Flat-heeled black shoes (see additional guidance)

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL ITEMS OF CLOTHING ARE CLEARLY NAMED.
Students may be sent home if their appearance is deemed inappropriate. The school reserves the right to decide whether any individual’s choice of clothing is acceptable.
Sometimes, students arrive in school wearing inappropriate trousers or shoes which they have purchased from uniform sections of high street stores but which are not in line with our uniform policy. We want to avoid parents having to replace these items to meet our expectations and so the following information has been produced to assist in making appropriate choices first time.
Shoes and boots (additional guidance)
Shoes/boots should be entirely black, flat-heeled (no higher than 2.5cm) and leather or leather style in appearance. They should not have any logos or writing on them. Plain, ankle-height, black leather or leather-look boots are permitted. Shoes and boots should be worn with trousers covering ankles and have only black laces.
Unacceptable items include: canvas, fabric or suede trainers or trainers with visible logos, high heels, suede, pumps, canvas, boots that are above ankle-height, and coloured or multi-coloured laces.

Trousers and Skirts (additional guidance)

Boys: Plain black, tailored and suitable for business wear. Unacceptable items include: cords, cotton or denim and trousers that are skin-tight.
Girls: Our uniform suppliers provide a range of tailored trousers and skirts in different styles. Trousers and skirts should be plain or pleated black (knee length) and. Unacceptable items include:
Hipsters, cargo style, skin-tight trousers, leggings, jeggings, stretch trousers, denim, shiny fabrics and any coloured external labelling are not permitted.
Girls who wear a skirt and socks should make sure that the socks do not come over the knee.
Jewellery
● No jewellery other than a watch, school badges and one small, plain ear stud per ear may be worn. The school will not accept liability for these items. The wearing of other jewellery and body piercings is not allowed for health and safety reasons e.g. rings, nose studs, tongue studs, eyebrow and navel rings.
● Items of jewellery and wrist watches should not be worn in PE, Games and swimming lessons.
PLEASE NOTE: it is not an acceptable excuse for a student to ask to wear unapproved jewellery to prevent a pierced ear or nose from closing up. In the short term, piercings may be covered with a plaster but students who have nose piercings are expected to wear clear plastic spacers. In these circumstances, a student refusing to remove an item of jewellery will be removed from lessons and parents/carers contacted.
Makeup/Hair styles
● Year 7 and 8 girls are not allowed to wear makeup. Year 9, 10 and 11 girls can wear a discrete amount of makeup (i.e. almost unnoticeable). The school reserves the right to decide whether any individual’s use of makeup is acceptable.
● Year 9, 10 and 11 girls can wear discrete nail varnish that must be neutral in colour (i.e. non-bold colours and non-decorative). False nails are not permitted. Refusal to remove nail varnish will result in parents/carers contacted.
The school reserves the right to decide whether a hairstyle is ‘extreme’ in either style or colour. Colouring that stands out and is obviously different from the student’s natural hair colour (e.g. pink, blue, green, red etc.), tramlines, shaved areas that leave hair at different lengths and hair shaped into patterns are not acceptable.
● Braids can be worn but they should not be extreme in colour or quantity
PLEASE NOTE: Hair dyes take several days to wash out and tramlines/shaved areas take several days to grow back. Please save experimentation for the six week summer holiday.

Covid-19 and self-isolation? The council is here to help

If you’re asked to self-isolate, it’s really important that you do so for the full ten days.

Solihull Council understands that this can be difficult and has local teams who can arrange help and support.

This could be anything from financial help to shopping vouchers and priority delivery slots to fuel top ups. Even help with dog walking!

If you’re experiencing financial hardship we can help with white goods like fridge replacements too.

We can also provide emotional support and have people on hand for a friendly chat if you’re struggling with self-isolation.

As lockdown eases over the coming months, it’s going to be even more important to self-isolate when asked to. It’s not easy, but by self-isolating you’ll be helping everyone to get back to normal as quickly as possible.
